July means summer has arrived in full force, and that means storms, heat, humidity, and air conditioning bills. Your home in the summer should be a place of relaxation and enjoyment. By taking steps to properly and regularly maintain your house, it will remain a source of pleasure for years to come. That's why we're providing a few simple tasks and reminders you can do this month to keep your home in tip top shape all year long:

  • Foundation - check for cracks, water or mold

  • Garage - de-clutter & donate

  • Fences - repair, paint & seal as needed

  • Artificial plants - clean. Click here for a how-to.

  • HVAC: vacuum, dust and possibly change filter.

  • Garbage disposal - crush ice (sharpens), baking soda and citrus fruit rinds (freshens).

  • Range hood fan - check & clean. Use a degreaser from an auto parts store mixed with hot water. Let the filter sit for a few minutes, rinse it off.

  • Plumbing - check for leaks on supply lines to sinks and toilets.

  • Fire Extinguisher - place near kitchen and check charge.

  • Water heater - drain, flush out & refill

So before you pack up and head out for your summer vacation, take the time to tackle these home maintenance chores. This month's checklist balances all the fun with all the ways to stay cool and comfortable at home. Knock one item off your list each weekend and take advantage of everything July has to offer!
