July starts out with a bang with Independence Day. Across the US, this is generally the hottest month of the year, and when most everyone is headed to a beach or the mountains to look for a little respite.

We kept this month’s list as small as possible, so that you can enjoy the holidays and vacations, but there are some items that need some attention & this is a great month to knock them out. On dry days that aren’t too blisteringly hot to work, it’s prime time to fix areas that the year’s wear and tear may be turning into future problems.

  • Foundation - check for cracks, water or mold

  • Garage - de-clutter & donate

  • Fences - repair, paint & seal as needed

  • Artificial plants - clean. Click here for a how-to.

  • HVAC: vacuum, dust and possibly change filter.

  • Garbage disposal - crush ice (sharpens), baking soda and citrus fruit rinds (freshens).

  • Range hood fan - check & clean. Use a degreaser from an auto parts store mixed with hot water. Let the filter sit for a few minutes, rinse it off.

  • Plumbing - check for leaks on supply lines to sinks and toilets.

  • Fire Extinguisher - place near kitchen and check charge.

  • Water heater - drain, flush out & refill
